Overview

Summary:

As a parasitologist, my interests focus on understanding the nature of parasite life cycles, the systematics of different parasitic groups, and investigating pathogenicity to their host(s).

Education:

  • Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.), Veterinary Medicine Science, Mississippi State University, 2017
  • Bachelor of Science (B.S.), Biological Sciences, Mississippi State University, 2011
  • Associate of Arts (A.A.), General Studies, Jones County Junior College, 2008

Research interests:

My research experience centers around a group of cnidarian parasites that primarily infect fish and annelids, the myxozoans. The catfish aquaculture industry in the southeastern United States is plagued by yearly losses due to the myxozoan Henneguya ictaluri for which there is no economically feasible method of control or treatment. Through experimental studies of host susceptibility and parasite development, management strategies to reduce exposure or parasite prevalence are being examined.

Trematodes of piscivorous birds and freshwater fish are another area of focus for my lab. Most of this work is centered around systematics and life cycle elucidation. These studies offer data on parasite diversity and host specificity which allows for development of management strategies.
