Mission and Overview Specialty Areas DCBS Faculty and Staff

The Department of Comparative Biomedical Sciences

The Department of Comparative Biomedical Sciences (DCBS) is involved in the management and delivery of the first two years, or Phase I of the Doctor of Veterinary Medicine curriculum and faculty members of the department play key roles in a program designed to provide veterinary students with a high-quality research experience. In addition, faculty in the department are actively involved in classes, research, and training activities for graduate students and postdoctoral fellows in various other areas of animal and human health.

Mission and Overview

The Department of Comparative Biomedical Sciences provides interdisciplinary research by building appropriate “know-how” in understanding disease, developing and/or advancing therapeutics, and enhancing career perspectives of future veterinarians as well as graduate students and postdoctoral fellows. Thereby, the department’s mission is to advance biomedical knowledge by bridging basic science with clinical application thus providing a platform for improving health outcomes across human and animal species.

A Commitment to Teaching

The Department of Comparative Biomedical Sciences is involved in the management and delivery of the first two years or Phase I of the Doctor of Veterinary Medicine curriculum as well as various graduate programs in veterinary sciences and One Health. These courses include anatomy, bacteriology, biochemistry, molecular biology, immunology, parasitology, pharmacology, physiology, toxicology, virology, food safety, among others. Besides teaching into these curricula these courses, faculty members are actively involved in mentoring research thereby delivering a well-structured education experience with the aim to foster the next generation of leaders involved in animal and human health. Many department members serve as mentors for veterinary students in the Vet Med Research Scholars program and some faculty mentor undergraduate students as well.

A Commitment to Research

The Department of Comparative Biomedical Sciences is committed in the training of veterinarians, graduate students, and postdoctoral fellows become tomorrow’s leaders in addressing unmet global health needs / challenges. In doing so, the department provides an integrated multidisciplinary research experience by combining basic laboratory findings with animal models. Our research also combines basic science with clinical application thereby allowing the opportunity for translational research in various areas including cancer, metabolic diseases, infectious diseases, development of antidotes/therapeutics, among others.

A Commitment to Service

The Department of Comparative Biomedical Sciences is committed to service through advancing research, providing excellent biomedical education, and training the next generation of researchers in addressing major health challenges. Moreover, the department is committed to providing diagnostic services to the aquaculture industry through the College’s Aquatic Diagnostic Laboratory.
