Epidemiology and Public Health Practice
Veterinary epidemiology is the study of the distribution, patterns, and determinants of health and disease in animal populations. It focuses on understanding how diseases spread among animals, identifying risk factors, and developing strategies for prevention and control. This field uses statistical and analytical methods to monitor disease outbreaks, assess disease prevalence, and evaluate interventions, ultimately supporting herd health, food safety, and zoonotic disease prevention. Our faculty and staff participate in outbreak investigations to support public health officials, private practitioners, diagnosticians, clinicians, animal caregivers, and other public stakeholders. Their work helps develop surveillance programs, policy development, and emergency response to ensure safe food systems, control disease transmission, and promote One Health—a collaborative approach linking human, animal, and environmental health.
