MSU CVM Alumni Council Update: New Board Members and Ongoing Initiatives
The Alumni Council enters 2026 with continued momentum, marked by board transitions and a strong focus on mentorship.
At the council’s February board meeting, the council recognized the service of its inaugural members who completed their terms: Dr. Kathryn Primm, Dr. Mike Gowan, Dr. Bob Watson, Dr. Johny Meyers, Dr. Matt McGee, Dr. Audra Alley, and past President Dr. Taylor Lyne. As founding members of the newly formed Alumni Council, their leadership and vision were instrumental in establishing a strong foundation for future success.
We are pleased to welcome new board members Dr. Kristopher Appler and Dr. Grace Dewberry, who join current President Dr. James Yates and fellow board members in guiding the council’s work forward.
A highlight of the season was the Alumni Council’s February Mix and Mingle, generously sponsored by Idexx. The event brought together mentors and mentees participating in the Alumni Council Mentoring Program, along with alumni who were on site for the MVMA meeting. The gathering provided a valuable opportunity to strengthen connections, foster mentorship relationships, and engage with the broader alumni community.
The Mentoring Program remains a key priority, with 59 students paired with alumni mentors in this yearlong program.
“The strength of our mentorship program lies in the genuine relationships being built between our alumni and students,” said Dr. James Yates, CVM Alumni Council President. “These connections not only support professional growth, but also reinforce the sense of community that makes our alumni network so special.”
A call for participation in the next mentorship program cohort will be announced in June.
Looking ahead, the council is excited to support Alumni Weekend at the Wise Center this fall, including new sponsorship opportunities, and will launch a survey to better understand what alumni engagement means to our community. The council is also developing an alumni speaker initiative to connect graduates with student organizations.
With a clear focus on mentorship and connection, the Alumni Council looks forward to another impactful year.
