VetAspire Program

Be a veterinary student for a day!

Students receive instruction from a faculty member

MSU CVM is committed to inspiring future generations to pursue careers in the field of veterinary medicine. Our doors are always open to those with an interest in learning more about becoming a veterinarian; however, we realize that not every student has the means or resources readily accessible to make visiting a veterinary college possible. In an effort to address this issue, we created VetAspire.

VetAspire is an exciting program that enables a select group of high school and undergraduate students to spend a day at MSU CVM. On six occasions a year, five students are selected and participate in the program, giving them the opportunity to experience the field of veterinary medicine first-hand.

VetAspire is led by actual MSU CVM professors with the assistance of current veterinary students, and those attending participate in clinics, lectures, and hands-on activities in the Wise Center, home to the MSU College of Veterinary Medicine.

The program is specifically for students who:

  • are sophomores, juniors or seniors in high school or are freshmen in college
  • are educationally, economically and/or socially disadvantaged

All students who apply are considered, but priority is given to those who meet the program criteria.

Our only expectations of participants are that they are committed to participating in all program activities and are respectful of themselves and others at all times during the program.

Students pose with a calfIt is the hope of MSU CVM leaders that by exposing these underserved students to the field, their interest in it will grow, and they will ultimately choose veterinary medicine as a career path. Participation in the program also provides these students with an understanding of the real-world impact of math, science and communications training.

Those participating in VetAspire receive an authentic “vet student” experience, including exposure to the following:

  • key components of the overall profession of veterinary medicine
  • different career avenues for those in the field of veterinary medicine
  • veterinary curriculum and classroom instruction
  • hands-on learning opportunities in the laboratory, field and clinic
  • interaction with multiple species of animals

Participants also establish relationships with veterinary professionals and create life-long bonds with fellow students from across the state.

VetAspire dates for Spring 2020 are as follows:

  • January 17th
  • February 28th
  • March 20th
  • April 9th

All sessions begin at 9am and end at 4pm.
